Before You Hire Another Salesperson, Ask These 5 Questions
When revenue is inconsistent, hiring another salesperson can feel like the obvious answer.
More people should create more activity. More activity should create more opportunities. More opportunities should create more revenue.
Sometimes that happens.
But if the underlying sales system is unclear, another hire may simply add more activity without adding more predictable results.
Before you post the job, begin recruiting, or invest in another compensation plan, it may be worth stepping back and asking five questions about the sales infrastructure already in place.
1. Does Every Salesperson Follow a Defined Process?
Can each salesperson clearly explain the milestones they follow from first conversation through decision and close?
Or does every person sell differently?
A defined sales process gives leaders a common way to coach, inspect opportunities, identify gaps, and improve performance. Without one, success often depends on individual experience, personality, or effort.
That can work for a top performer. It is much harder to scale across an entire team.
2. Can You Trust What Is in the Pipeline?
A full pipeline is not necessarily a healthy pipeline.
If opportunities do not have confirmed next steps, a clear decision process, real urgency, and access to the right decision makers, the forecast may be more hopeful than reliable.
Ask yourself whether your team knows the difference between an early conversation and a qualified opportunity.
If your pipeline looks full but your forecast still feels unreliable, the S.C.A.L.E. Sales Audit helps identify the process, pipeline, coaching, accountability, and execution gaps that may be affecting predictable revenue.
3. Are Managers Coaching Behavior, or Only Reviewing Numbers?
Most sales managers review results. Fewer consistently coach the behaviors that create results.
A number tells you what happened. Coaching helps determine why it happened and what needs to change next.
If managers only discuss revenue, closed business, and missed goals, the team may keep repeating the same issues. Strong sales leadership includes coaching prospecting activity, qualification, next steps, opportunity strategy, and accountability.
The question is not whether your managers care. The question is whether they have a repeatable coaching process that helps their people improve.
4. Are Sales Standards and Accountability Consistent Across the Team?
Do all salespeople understand what is expected of them each week?
Are the standards for activity, pipeline management, follow up, qualification, and next steps clear? And are those standards applied consistently?
When accountability changes from person to person, frustration grows. Top performers may feel they carry too much of the load. Managers may avoid difficult conversations. Owners may step in to solve problems that should be handled within the sales organization.
Consistency creates clarity. Clarity makes accountability easier.
5. Does the Owner Still Have to Rescue Deals, Drive Revenue, and Hold People Accountable?
Many business owners become the safety net for the sales team.
They get involved in stalled opportunities. They push follow up. They hold people accountable. They step in when important deals need to be saved.
At first, that may feel necessary. Over time, it can become the constraint limiting growth.
If the owner is still required to create momentum, rescue deals, and manage daily sales activity, the business may not yet have a scalable sales system.

Hiring can be the right decision. But it is not always the first decision.
