One of the biggest challenges facing sales teams today isn’t a lack of opportunities. It’s holding onto opportunities that aren’t real.
We call it hopium.
Hopium happens when salespeople continue believing a deal will close without enough evidence that the prospect is actually moving forward.
It sounds like:
“They really liked me.”
“They asked for a proposal.”
“I know they’re busy.”
“They just need to talk to their boss.”
Meanwhile, the opportunity sits in the pipeline. And sits. And sits.
The Cost of Hopium
When salespeople hold onto unqualified opportunities, the impact goes far beyond one stalled deal.
It can lead to:
Inflated sales pipelines
Inaccurate sales forecasts
Wasted prospecting and follow-up time
Poor resource allocation
Lower quote-to-close rates
Missed revenue opportunities
Sales teams spending time on prospects who aren't ready to buy
The problem isn't that salespeople are following up.
The problem is they may be following up without knowing whether there is actually a qualified opportunity.
Replace Hope With Evidence
The answer isn't simply to follow up more.
A strong, structured sales process helps salespeople qualify opportunities based on facts rather than assumptions.
Early in the sales process, salespeople should understand:
Pain: What problem is the prospect trying to solve?
Impact: What happens if the problem continues?
Budget: What resources are available to address the problem?
Decision Process: How will the prospect make the decision?
Decision Makers: Who needs to be involved?
Timeline: When does the prospect need to make a decision?
Next Steps: What specifically has both sides agreed to do next?
These conversations create clarity for both the salesperson and the prospect.
And if the opportunity isn't real, the salesperson can identify that sooner and move on to a better opportunity.
Your Pipeline Should Tell the Truth
A healthy sales pipeline isn't about having the most opportunities in your CRM.
It's about having qualified opportunities with a clear path to a decision.
Sales leaders should challenge their teams to look beyond activity and ask whether each opportunity has enough evidence to justify its place in the forecast.
Instead of asking, “Do you think this deal will close?”
Ask:
“What evidence do we have that this prospect is actually moving forward?”
That simple question can completely change a pipeline review.
Stop managing your pipeline with hope.
Start managing it with evidence.
Hopium addiction can be cured.
Just say no to hopium.
