Learn to Stop Free Consulting

|

The free consulting trap: When helping a prospect goes too far...

One of the most dangerous sales blind spots is free consulting.

It happens when professional salespeople give a prospect so much information, advice, and expertise that the prospect has everything they need to make a decision without truly engaging in the sales process.

You explain what your product or service does. You show them how it can solve their problem. You provide pricing, specifications, recommendations, and details.

You’re being helpful.

But you may also be giving away too much.

When educating becomes free consulting

There is nothing wrong with educating a prospect. Helping them understand their options and how you can solve a problem is an important part of selling.

The issue comes when the conversation becomes one-sided.

You are doing all the talking, answering every question, solving every problem, and providing all the information, while the prospect isn't giving you what you need in return.

Do you understand why they are looking for a solution? Have you uncovered their priorities? Do you know what is driving the decision? Have you identified who else is involved?

Most importantly, do you know whether this prospect is actually a good fit for you?

Make sure you're getting what you need

The goal isn't to stop helping or educating prospects. It's to create a balanced conversation.

Yes, answer questions and share your expertise. But ask questions, too.

Before jumping into solutions, take the time to understand what is happening in their business and what they are trying to accomplish.

Ask:

What are you hoping to accomplish?
What's driving the need for a change?
How are you handling that today?
What would a successful solution look like?
Who else would be involved in making this decision?

The more you understand, the better equipped you are to determine whether there is a real opportunity and whether you are the right fit.

Don't give it all away

Being helpful is good. Becoming the prospect's free consultant isn't the goal.

Before giving away every piece of information you have, make sure you're having a two-way conversation. Your expertise and time have value, and the information you provide should be part of a meaningful sales conversation.

So the next time you find yourself answering question after question and giving a prospect everything they need, pause and ask yourself:

Am I learning what I need to know, too?

Effective selling isn't about giving away everything you know. It's about creating a conversation where both sides have the information they need to make a good decision.
