One of the biggest leadership blind spots is assuming your team knows what to do simply because you’ve shown them once, explained it, or told them to “figure it out.”
The reality? Even great people need clarity, guidance, and access to what works.
That’s where a playbook can make a difference.
A good playbook captures the best practices your team can consistently rely on. It might outline how to run a meeting, coach an employee, handle a difficult conversation, onboard a new hire, or move a sales opportunity through the process.
Without that structure, valuable knowledge often stays in the heads of a few experienced people. When they leave, so does much of that knowledge.
Stop expecting people to reinvent the wheel
Leaders sometimes say, “We hire smart people. They’ll figure it out.”
But figuring it out often means making mistakes that someone else has already made and solved.
Your people want to do the right thing. When they don't have the experience, resources, or guidance they need, they’ll either improvise or avoid the situation altogether.
Neither is a great strategy for consistent performance.
Give your team a path to mastery
Think about professional sports. Every player, from the rookie to the veteran, works from a team playbook. It creates a shared understanding of how the team operates and gives everyone a framework for execution.
Business teams need the same thing.
Your playbook doesn't have to be complicated. Start by identifying what your best people do consistently well. Document it. Teach it. Use it. Then update it as your team learns what works.
The goal isn't to control every move your people make.
It's to give them the clarity and confidence to make better decisions without having to reinvent the wheel every time.
Sometimes the biggest leadership blind spot isn't what your team is doing wrong.
It's what you haven't given them to work with.
