Are You Solving the Problem or Just Pitching a Product?

|

There’s a lot of confusion about pain and its role in sales. Understanding a prospect’s pain means more than identifying a surface-level problem. It means uncovering how that problem affects the business and the person dealing with it.

Move Beyond Features and Benefits

Good salespeople often hear a surface-level concern and respond with features and benefits. But when the conversation moves too quickly to a product presentation, it can become more about the seller’s solution than the prospect’s needs.

Great salespeople ask questions to understand the business impact. How is the problem affecting results? What is it costing the organization? What could improve if the issue were resolved? Their answers help build a logical business case for change, including the potential return on investment.

Understand the Personal Impact

The most effective salespeople go deeper. They build enough trust for prospects to talk about how a business challenge affects them personally. It could be pressure to meet goals, frustration with ongoing problems, or concern about what will happen if nothing changes.

These conversations require care and respect. The goal is not to pry or create discomfort. It is to understand what matters to the prospect and whether the problem is important enough to address.

When a prospect feels heard, the solution becomes more relevant. A presentation grounded in both the business impact and the prospect’s personal perspective is more meaningful and more likely to support a clear decision.

A Question for Sales Leaders

How well does your team uncover the real pain behind a prospect’s problem? And what kind of salesperson is each team member becoming?
