Better Sales Meetings Start with a Clear Up-Front Contract

|

Have you ever left a sales meeting thinking it went well, only to realize you never really learned what the buyer wanted to discuss?

A strong sales conversation starts with clear expectations. That’s where the Up-Front Contract comes in.

An Up-Front Contract is a simple way to establish the purpose, agenda, and desired outcome of a meeting before the conversation begins. It helps create a more open, balanced discussion and gives both the seller and buyer permission to be honest about what they need.

Here’s a simple approach:

  1. Confirm the time.
“Do you still have 30 minutes to connect?”
  2. Share your agenda and give permission to say no.
“Today, I’d like to cover X, Y, and Z. If it makes sense, we can discuss next steps. If you don’t see value in what we offer, that’s okay too.”
  3. Ask for the buyer’s agenda.
“Before we get started, what would you like to accomplish during our time together? Is there anything specific you’d like to discuss?”

That last question can change the entire direction of the meeting.

You may discover that the buyer has different priorities, questions you didn’t anticipate, or needs you didn’t know existed. Instead of spending valuable time presenting what you think matters, you can focus on what matters most to them.

You won’t build trust or earn a sale without understanding what your buyer cares about. And that understanding often starts with the first few minutes of the conversation.

The same idea applies outside of sales. Asking friends, family members, or colleagues about their expectations can lead to better communication, fewer misunderstandings, and more meaningful interactions.

Don’t assume you know what the other person wants from the conversation. Ask.

A clear agenda creates a better experience for everyone.

What would happen if you started every important conversation by asking, “What would you like to get out of our time together?”--
