The Stigma Around Sales — And Why It’s Holding Leaders Back

By Matt Saia, Sandler El Dorado Hills

There is a stigma around the word “sales.”

I hear it all the time.

“I would never go into sales.”
“I’m not a salesperson.”

Yet those same people decide to open a business. Launch a new idea. Step into leadership. Build something of their own.

And then reality sets in.

They have to sell.

They have to sell their vision to investors.
Sell change to their team.
Sell value to clients.
Sell growth inside their organization.

The truth is simple. We are all in sales in some way.

If you are influencing decisions, gaining buy-in, persuading others, or driving outcomes, you are selling. The only question is whether you are doing it with intention and skill — or just hoping people say yes.

Sales is not about pressure. It is not about slick tactics. At its best, it is about clarity, leadership, and helping others make confident decisions.

When leaders avoid the word “sales,” they often avoid building the skill set that drives growth.

And growth requires selling.

If you run a company or lead a team, improving how you sell ideas, direction, and value is not optional. It is foundational.

At Sandler El Dorado Hills, we help business owners and leaders remove the stigma, strengthen their sales process, and build teams that sell with confidence and integrity.

Because whether we like the word or not, we are all selling every day.
